Known as one of the four Li, the Start of Winter has many customs and cultures, such as eating dumplings, swimming in winter and making up for the winter.
The “Start of Winter” solar term falls on November 7 or 8 every year. In ancient times, Chinese folk used to take Start of winter as the beginning of winter. In fact, the winter doesn’t all begin at the same time, except the coastal areas of South China, which have no winter all year round, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which has a long winter without summer. According to the standard of climatology to divide the four seasons, if the average pentad temperature in the second half of the year falls below 10℃ as winter, the saying that “the beginning of winter is the beginning of winter” is basically consistent with the climate law of Huang-Huai region. In the northernmost areas of China, Mohe and areas north of the Greater Khingan Mountains already enter winter in early September, and in the capital Beijing, winter begins in late October. In the Yangtze River basin, winter begins in earnest around the “light snow” solar term.
